Letal Cross - Maldita Nación

Blackthrash with that Latin fire we all love - 85%

This review came as a request by Karl L., Guitarist of the band. He approached me via e-mail, after he checked some of my reviews in Metal Archives, and asked if I could review them. I happily complied.

I gave a brief listen to their second demo "Maldita Nacion", and boy, it got me hooked.

Gotta be honest here, I have a thing for Latin American bands, due to their combination of melody and heaviness on whatever they compose metal related.

This fits the description of your typical "latinoamericano" metal. Letal Cross just drips oldschool thrash, with some cool hints of heavy, all drenched in the darkness mass that only black metal can provide.

First thing that will get to you is the vocals. They are harsh and high pitched. I can only imagine some mad men galloping on a black mare from hell, with a baseball bat, cracking heads and screaming is lungs of out of satisfaction. And that horse gallops fast. The riffing is very 80's sounding, and the drums are in the punk/crossover territory. This is some moshing music, not your typical headbanging/standing still black metal act.

The production is above average, when you consider that black metal and punk are lo-fi by nature, but this doesn't compromise the band's sound, but it adds a certain raging loudness that is quite captivating. This demo is album quality, and my only gripe with this is because of that, it is an demo, and not an LP. The relentless speed of this release falls short to it's 4 track limitation. Perhaps the band didn't had more material, or they had some kind of restrain (i have my bands, I know that happens), but that is not the band's fault, but more a complain of someone who is hungry for more of this kind of spanking.

This Damned Nation is going to get brought into their knees by these dudes, and I am here in the sidelines rooting for that day to come. This is perfect for all those anarchist punk rockers who are eager to listen to some good anti-system enraged music.

Until then, I will eagerly await for their 1st Album.
